Digital Color

Web safe colors were critical during the early web era when most monitors could only display 256 colors simultaneously. The 216-color palette (6 x 6 x 6 RGB values) was the intersection of the 256-color palettes used by both Mac OS and Windows. Designers would restrict their palettes to these colors to avoid dithering (visible dot patterns from simulated colors). With modern true-color displays capable of 16.7 million colors, web safe restrictions are obsolete. However, the concept is historically significant and occasionally referenced in color tool interfaces for legacy compatibility.
