Color mixing occurs in two fundamentally different ways: additive and subtractive. Additive mixing combines light (used in screens), where combining all colors produces white. Subtractive mixing combines pigments or dyes (used in painting and printing), where combining all colors produces a dark brown or black. Understanding both systems is essential for anyone working across digital and physical media. The results of mixing can differ dramatically between the two systems, which is why a color that looks perfect on screen may not reproduce accurately in print.
