Flat design emerged in the early 2010s as a reaction to skeuomorphic design, championed by Microsoft's Metro design language and later adopted by Apple and Google. Flat design relies heavily on color to create visual hierarchy, differentiate elements, and convey meaning, since it deliberately avoids depth cues like shadows and gradients. The 'Flat UI Colors' palette (turquoise, emerald, peter-river blue, amethyst, etc.) became iconic of this movement. While pure flat design has evolved into semi-flat or flat 2.0 (incorporating subtle shadows), the emphasis on bold, clean color use remains influential in modern UI design.
