يؤثر عمق البت لكل قناة في سلاسة الانتقالات اللونية. تحتوي الصورة بعمق 8 بت على 256 مستوى لكل قناة، وهو غالباً كافٍ للناتج النهائي لكنه قد يُظهر تدرّجات مرئية (banding) عند التحرير المكثف. تحتوي الصورة بعمق 16 بت على 65,536 مستوى لكل قناة، مما يوفّر هامش تحرير أكبر بكثير. في الفيديو، يُعدّ 10 بت المعيار لمحتوى HDR، ويوفّر أربعة أضعاف مستويات 8 بت. عند العمل بالتدرجات أو الظلال أو تصنيف الألوان، يمنع عمق البت الأعلى ظهور أثر التدرّج المرئي المعروف بالبوسترة (posterization) أو banding.
