채널당 비트 심도는 톤 전환의 부드러움에 영향을 미칩니다. 8비트 이미지는 채널당 256단계를 가지며, 이는 최종 출력물에는 대체로 충분하지만 심하게 편집할 경우 밴딩이 나타날 수 있습니다. 16비트 이미지는 채널당 65,536단계를 가져 훨씬 더 많은 편집 여유를 제공합니다. 영상에서는 HDR 콘텐츠의 표준이 10비트로, 8비트의 4배에 달하는 단계를 제공합니다. 그러데이션, 그림자, 색보정 작업을 할 때 더 높은 비트 심도는 포스터화나 밴딩으로 알려진 눈에 띄는 계단 현상 아티팩트를 방지합니다.
