Color Harmony

Color Harmony

The principle that certain color combinations are inherently pleasing to the eye because of their structured relationship on the color wheel.

Color harmony theory posits that combinations based on geometric relationships on the color wheel produce aesthetically pleasing results. This includes complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, and tetradic arrangements. The concept originates from music theory parallels and was formalized by color theorists like Michel Eugene Chevreul and Johannes Itten. Modern research suggests that preference for harmonious combinations is partly innate (related to cone response patterns) and partly learned (influenced by cultural exposure). In practice, harmonious palettes reduce cognitive load, making designs feel organized and intentional rather than random or chaotic.
