Color Theory

Color Temperature

The perceived warmth or coolness of a color, typically associated with reds and yellows (warm) or blues and greens (cool).

Color temperature is a perceptual quality rather than a physical measurement, though it originates from the concept of black-body radiation measured in Kelvin. In design, warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) tend to advance visually and evoke energy, while cool colors (blues, greens, violets) tend to recede and evoke calm. Color temperature is critical in photography, film, and lighting design, where shifts in temperature dramatically affect mood and atmosphere. Designers often balance warm and cool tones to create visual depth and emotional resonance.
